Travelling the Road of Natural Interfaces

The forms for interfacing between humans and the machines are constantly evolving, and the creation rate of new forms for human-machine interfacing seems to be increasing. Long gone are the days of using punch cards and card reader to tell … Continue reading

An interface around the bend

User interface options continue to grow in richness of expression as sensor and compute processing costs and energy requirements continue to drop. The “paper” computing device that supports bending gestures is such example, and it hints that touch interfaces may only be the beginning of where user interfaces are headed. Continue reading

Looking at Tesla Touch

Tesla Touch is a prototype touchscreen feedback technology that relies on the principles of electrovibration to simulate textures on a user’s fingertips. It offers interesting potential capabilities to touch feedback systems, but I suspect the process to productize the technology will uncover a number of use-case challenges. Continue reading

Haptic User Interfaces

Digitally driven touch interfaces are overwhelmingly dominated by visual-based feedback mechanisms. This is in contrast to mature interfaces that use a mechanical mechanism to accept inputs from the user and feedback that input to the user. Developers that are familiar with haptic interfaces are bringing touch feedback, such as vibrations and clicks, into their designs. However, there are opportunities to also impart information to the user beyond feedback through haptic mechanisms.
